There are two ideas running parallel to this instrumental album. The first is the sonic theme that you get immediately from the first track, Ender’s Theme. In Ender’s Theme, I made an instrumental piano part, and then sampled that to make something different altogether. This idea of using a sample to make something entirely new permeates the whole album, where I’ll pull from a single sample, kicks, snares, hi-hats, etc. to make something new. The second idea is found in the name. While Assorted Lunch Beats is a joke sort of name, because I like puns, it also hints at something deeper. This deeper idea is in a mantra I say to myself, “Sunlight, not Moonlight”, which I’ve stylized as SLNML. The idea of SLNML is that so often artists are seen as a person with a day job who moonlights as an artist. I like to think that the reverse is much truer. We are artists who sunlight as whatever we do for our day jobs. This change, I feel, gives an artist more agency.
